GETTING AROUND

Chichester is well connected by rail for London, Brighton and further afield. There are also stations at Fishbourne, Bosham and Emsworth. For details of train times and fares see the National Rail Enquiries. Click this link to show rail routes from the airports to Chichester.

An easier option is an airport taxi, which will take you door-to-door but does need to be booked (and possibly paid for) in advance. We have used Airport Travel (Tel: +44 (0) 23 9265 0202) but there are several other taxi companies. Prices are usually per vehicle so can compete with train fares for a few people.

For taxi rides between Chichester and the surrounding villages try: Central Cars (01243 780780), Chichester (01243 785765), Dunnaways (01243 782403) or Direct (01243 533335). Chichester rail station also has a taxi rank. The airport websites have links to several car hire companies. For road routes from Heathrow (postcode: UB3 5AP), Gatwick (RH6 0LX), Southampton (SO18 2NL) and elsewhere visit MultiMap and / or Google Maps.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

Chichester is quite a small city but there is a cathedral, some Roman ruins, lots of pubs and some lovely coastline nearby (see Visit Sussex). Nearby places of interest include Arundel Castle, old ships at Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, Brighton and the Seven Sisters. Daytrips as far as Stonehenge (near Salisbury), Brighton and London are all possible by train and / or car (see Visit SE England).

Of course, the sites of London merit several days visit on their own and the rest of Britain is compact enough to be accessible in a week or two. Click the thumbnails for pictures of our road trip last May, which took in London, Cambridge (also above), Newcastle, Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District, Glasgow and Edinburgh, all in 8 days! Other places that are definitely worth a visit include Bath (near Bristol), Devon & Cornwall, Oxford and the Cotswolds, Liverpool (for Beatles fans) to name but a few. Visit Britain is a good place to start, as are travel guides like the Lonely Planet books.
